Welcome to Introduction to the Read/Write Web
This web-based, hybrid course has been developed by Justin Knull for 11th and 12th grade students at Morrice Jr./Sr. High School in Morrice, MI and as a capstone project to complete a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Technology from Central Michigan University. This course is set up in Modules that last one to two weeks each, and it is intended to cover one semester. I welcome anyone who comes across this work to use it for yourself; I hope you can benefit from my work putting this together.
According to Discovery Education: Web 2.0 is about revolutionary new ways of creating, collaborating, editing and sharing user-generated content online. It's also about ease of use. There's no need to download, and teachers and students can master many of these tools in minutes. Technology has never been easier or more accessible to all. The intent of this course is to familiarize students with these new and exciting tools, and practice using these media to create, collaborate, communicate, and share. As Steve Hargadon has said, "I believe that the read/write Web, or what we are calling Web 2.0, will culturally, socially, intellectually, and politically have a greater impact than the advent of the printing press." I must mention, before you progress through the modules of this course, that there is a major piece missing from the course with respect to Web 2.0 tools: Social Networking. Because of the filters in place at many schools, ours included, I have deliberately left it out. We will simulate this aspect of the Read/Write Web through the creation of Weebly pages and blogs as well as a collection of links on a class wiki. However, if you have a social networking account, by all means share the work that you produce throughout this course in that manner as well. Much of this content was designed to be shared in that manner, and without Social Networking, we surely wouldn't have all of the tools we have to work with. Please read through the syllabus below, and begin in Quarter 1 with the first module. Happy Creating! |
